Russia, China oppose arms race in outer space: Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister
Moscow, November 25 / Xinhua / – China and Russia oppose an arms race in space. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Yucheng, commenting on a recent statement by the NATO leadership that space should become a new area for operations along with air and sea spaces, land and the cyber sphere.
“I think this is a very dangerous phenomenon on the part of NATO. China and Russia have always opposed the deployment of weapons in outer space and the development of an arms race in this space,” he told reporters in Moscow.
Le Yucheng noted that at one time China and Russia put forward an initiative to hold arms control talks in space with the aim of signing an international document. But the American side refused this initiative.
“I think we need to continue to firmly defend the world in outer space, as well as promote the peaceful use of outer space, and in no case should it be allowed to turn into a new field of war,” the diplomat emphasized, adding that China is interested in further establishing strategic cooperation with Russia in the space sector.
