China supports Russia’s initiative on the prohibition of placing weapons in space
BEIJING, September 23. / TASS /. China supports the initiative proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to conclude an international agreement banning the deployment of weapons in space. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stated this on Wednesday at a regular briefing.
“China and Russia together advocate the peaceful use of outer space and promote the idea of preventing the deployment of weapons in outer space and an arms race in this area. Over the past years, we have taken part in negotiations on international agreements that will be called fundamental to resolve the problem of security in space,” he stressed.
“At present, the United States, out of its selfish interests, opposes this process of arms control in space. At the same time, it has already declared space as a space in which it is necessary to ensure dominance, created a separate type of troops for these purposes, and even accelerated the trend towards placement of weapons in outer space, “the diplomat added.
“Ensuring security in outer space meets the interests of all mankind. We must create a mechanism for arms control in this area to maintain peace and general security in this area,” he summed up.
Thus, he commented on the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, voiced at the session of the UN General Assembly, to conclude an agreement by the leading space powers that would prohibit the deployment of weapons in space. The Russian leader in his speech also emphasized the need “to start a serious, deep conversation on the whole set of factors affecting strategic stability.”
