Council of Foreign Ministers adopts statement to prevent an arms race in space
The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) of post-Soviet republics in a meeting on Oct. 10, 2019 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, adopted a statement on preventing an arms race in outer space, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters, according to RIA Novosti.
A new document for our Ministerial Council was approved, and at the suggestion of the Russian side, a ministerial statement was adopted to prevent an arms race in outer space,” the Russian minister said.
He noted that in this area “there are many alarming signs accumulating that some states still have such plans. It is very important to draw attention to them and ensure work at negotiating platforms in order to agree on the conditions for the non-deployment of weapons in space,” Lavrov emphasized.
The Russian Foreign Minister also said that at the meeting of the CIS Ministerial Council, a draft strategy for cooperation in the field of information security was adopted, as well as documents on strengthening military cooperation, including the formation of a joint unit for humanitarian demining and the formation of joint communication systems.
